History of Livingston Township
Founded in 1875
Livingston Township was founded in 1875 primarily as an agricultural and forestry related community.
As the Township has grown, those historic uses of the land in Livingston Township continue to be a vital part of the community.
In recent times, expansion of the City of Gaylord has fostered commercial development in the Southwest corner of the Township.
This development is consistent with the long range plans of the Township.
However, the vast majority of the residents in the Township strongly wish to remain a rural community and support the preservation of the agriculture and forestry industry in the Township.
Recreation has become another important aspect of the Township.
The scenic vistas, lakes and rivers attract tourists from Michigan, as well as other states.
Livingston Township is the location of the headwater of the Sturgeon River, which begins at the Otsego Club Resort.
The beautiful Sturgeon Valley has been carved by the river and adds to the scenic amenities of the Township.
Taking Old 27 North from Gaylord the traveler discovers a serene and picturesque drive North to the Village of Vanderbilt.
The fall colors along this highway are spectacular.
Livingston Township has a population of 2,339 residents, which makes up almost ten percent of the population of the county.
